What is a Nurse Practitioner?

A Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a Registered Nurse with advanced clinical education and extensive experience. This specialized training empowers them to provide high-quality, autonomous care. In Newfoundland & Labrador, nurse practitioners must possess a Master’s degree in nursing (or equivalent advanced practice education), and pass a recognized NP licensing exam.

NPs are distinguished by their “whole-person” philosophy. Rather than just treating a symptom, they focus on the complete well-being of the individual by:

  • Comprehensive Assessment: Evaluating both physical and mental health needs through detailed medical histories.
  • Patient-Centred impact: Addressing how an illness affects a patient’s daily life, career, and family dynamics.
  • Preventative Health: Partnering with patients to find lifestyle solutions that promote long-term wellness.
  • Chronic Disease Management: Empowering patients with the education and tools needed to navigate long-term health challenges.
